Holiday Camps at Boroughmuir!

With the school year moving as fast as ever, I wanted to catch up with Alex Toolis to talk over holiday camps. This is one of the extra ways Boroughmuir Rugby and Community Sports Club Charity help out the local community.

Andy - Alex, we've got holiday camps for kids coming for the Easter and Summer holidays. What goes on at these?

Alex - We ran a really successful half term camp in February. We had approx 45 kids along including midis and minis. For minis we ran a physical literacy session as well as two rugby pitch sessions. We had the minis in the gym which they loved. Tilly, our Youth S&C said they were great and got stuck in. We want to train them early for the physical demands of rugby, and the kids we had were hugely enthusiastic to take this opportunity.

Andy - That's great. I spoke with Josh who is one of the P5's who told me he loved that the coaches were really interactive and supportive, and he had great fun running around all day with his friends and going to the gym was awesome. What a great opportunity we're offering.

Alex - Yes, some of the young ones really took to it, I'm really excited to see how they all develop.

Andy - What about older kids?

Alex - For midis - we run a full on strength and conditioning programme as well as providing a high performance rugby session and a mental skills training session. These skills are all essential to rugby, teamwork and being successful on and off the pitch. It's great that at Boroughmuir we can take our learnings from the seniors' experience and share that with a younger audience.

Andy - Is this just for Boroughmuir rugby members?

Alex - No- this is for anyone at all. Even, perhaps especially those not already doing rugby - it's a nice neat way to spend a day learning a lot of important transferable skills in a fun environment. Keeps them from sitting on the couch playing on their phone and gets them being active for the day! If anyone's got pals who they think might enjoy a session be sure to invite them along.

Andy- I've shared the details of the existing camps again here. Are there any further plans for the future?

Alex - We're going to run some specialist skills camps in the summer. We're looking at a Backs session run by Henry Pyrgos and Jordan Edmunds. These two guys have huge international experience between them, so it should be a brilliant session for anyone looking to be a back. Jordan has international experience with Scotland/GB Seven's so it's great to have Jordan for the alternate format of the game. For Forwards, we've got Johnny Matthews and myself lined up for a session and we're all really excited to see what we can do to make these focused sessions awesome.

Andy - Alex - thanks for all you're doing here and for setting up such a good lot of opportunities for young folk in our community. Any parents looking for a really good way to keep a kid happy and busy over the holidays should read the attached flyer for dates and can book via this link Boroughmuir Rugby Academy Camps 2025 for dates that are already in the diary. As and when the specialist skills sessions are lined up, more information will be shared about these too when these are nailed down.
