Ian J Thom
1942 – 2025
It is with much sadness that we announce the death of long serving Boroughmuir member Ian Thom.
Ian passed away peacefully on Wednesday 31st December after a short illness.
Ian was quite a player in his day, winning 7s medals at Gala, before heading off to Glasgow Accies, Edinburgh Southern, then Broughton before aligning with Boroughmuir.
After his playing career, Ian moved into refereeing. He was a well respected referee, referee assessor and rugby administrator. He championed all things rugby and was a key member of the Edinburgh Rugby Referees Society. In 2016 he was honoured with their Outstanding Service Cup.
Ian was a regular at Boroughmuir Rugby club and when not involved in refereeing, he’d be down the club supporting our youth and lower senior teams, even taking time out to give useful advice to whoever was refereeing the game he was watching.
Ian was also heavily involved with Boroughmuir High School rugby (with George Watson) and together they organised many successful overseas school rugby tours to Canada.
Ian is shown here with his fellow Boroughmuir match officials in 1996/7 (L to R); Peter Carruthers, Dougie Kerr, Mike Hall, Jim Fleming, Gavin Mackinnon and Ian.
Ian’s funeral is on Saturday 24th January at 10:30am Greenbank Church.
Our thoughts go out to his wife Isabel and family 💚💙
